So, you want to learn how to oil paint. Many artists painting in acrylic tend to be intimidated by oils because they seem harder to work with. However, I myself started in acrylic. I didn’t even know oils existed, let alone what you were able to accomplish with them.
I was in college when I discovered oil painting and to my delight, fell in love. My very first self-portrait painting is below. I was told the proper mediums to use and without that help, I wouldn’t have known where to start. So, I want to share that same knowledge with you!
My self-portrait “My Inner Mona Lisa”, Oil on self-made Canvas
Within these blog posts, which I’ll call step-by-step guides, I’ll incorporate photos of the actual process of painting.
My first post will be all about the materials you’ll need to get started. Now, keep in mind, these are the materials I use and that I’m comfortable with. I’ve been painting for a little over 7 years now, and I’m still learning.
An artist never stops learning, really.
I hope you never think you can’t do something just because you feel you can’t be “as good”, or because you simply feel inadequate. I myself suffered under that same hand, but I just want to encourage you to keep at it, work hard, and never give up.
So, I hope you enjoy these little tutorials and please feel welcome to share you painting upon completion with me!
